A gray motor, similar reservoir and familiar-looking stickers are not enough to confirm that a hydraulic power unit is genuine KTI. Check the actual manufacturer, model and serial records, then verify the controls, hydraulic circuit and support available for that unit.
Primary Mover sells and supports KTI power units alongside our own Primary Mover brand. We have handled calls from customers who believed they had a KTI unit, only to discover during identification that their equipment was a different manufacturer's lookalike.
Buying another brand can be an informed choice. The problem arises when a buyer expects genuine KTI equipment, functions and support based on a similar appearance. This guide explains what to check.
Why We Are Sharing This Comparison
After a KTI sale, a different, non-KTI lookalike arrived at our shop in a return package. Examining that unit highlighted how easily an exterior resemblance can create confusion about what someone owns.
We inspected the sample and checked it on our bench. Its performance raised concerns for the intended application. Detailed comparative test results are not presented here; this guide focuses on identification and the questions buyers should ask.
The photographs show the specific units we examined. They should not be treated as a universal visual checklist for every KTI model or every alternative power unit.
1. Compare the Hydraulic Manifold, Not Just the Motor Color
The manifold is the block that routes oil through the power unit's valves and working ports. Two units can have similar motors and tanks while using different hydraulic circuits.
Confirm the circuit diagram and model-specific specifications. The number of externally visible plugs or adjustment screws does not reliably establish how many relief valves, check valves or load-holding functions are inside.
Pressure Protection Can Differ Between Directions
For example, KTI's published Circuit 111 power-up/power-down documentation describes a 3,200 PSI primary relief and a separate 1,500 PSI secondary relief for the retract side, including protection against rod-end overpressure and thermal expansion.
That is a specific circuit example, not a pressure specification for every KTI unit. Ask how the actual model protects each working direction and how its check and holding functions operate. A similar-looking block is not evidence of the same protection.
Do not adjust a relief valve to imitate another unit's specification. Use the approved settings for the power unit, cylinder and connected components.
2. Check the KTI Model and Serial Information
The identification label is a useful starting point. Look for the manufacturer name, model number and serial information, then compare them with your invoice and the seller's records.
KTI requests model and serial information for service assistance. Label layouts and identifiers can vary, so use your actual records and supplier confirmation rather than expecting every genuine unit to match this photograph exactly.
Why a Genuine KTI From Primary Mover May Have a Different Tank or Missing Tank Label
Primary Mover sometimes changes reservoir sizes in-house to match an order. For example, a genuine KTI unit may arrive with a four-quart reservoir and receive a larger tank before shipment.
The original label is attached to the reservoir and does not always transfer cleanly. We retain the original KTI serial information in our records, while our sales SKU can change to reflect the supplied configuration.
A missing original tank sticker, by itself, does not establish that a unit is a lookalike. If you bought from Primary Mover, contact us with your order or invoice information so we can help check the recorded identity and supplied tank configuration.
Likewise, a sticker by itself is not complete verification. Identification is strongest when the label, unit configuration and purchase records agree.
3. Treat the Flag Sticker and Exterior as Clues
Many buyers recognize KTI equipment by its gray motor, labels and flag sticker. These details can help orient a comparison, but photographs of the exterior should be considered together with traceable model information.
A flag's presence or absence is not a stand-alone authenticity test. Check the manufacturer identity and supporting records before drawing a conclusion.
4. Verify Power-Up, Power-Down and Gravity-Down Functions
Selected KTI configurations provide power-up, power-down and gravity-down operation. Other genuine KTI models have different functions. Compare the exact model, pendant and hydraulic diagram.
A lookalike with a different manifold may provide powered extension and retraction without the same gravity-down option. That difference affects operation and troubleshooting, even if the unit looks familiar.
Button count alone does not establish the internal circuit or manufacturer. Ask the seller to identify each function and provide the matching instructions.
For an explanation of the circuit types, read Single-Acting vs. Double-Acting Hydraulic Power Units.
5. Compare Documented Motor and Pump Performance
Motor appearance does not establish its power rating. A familiar tank and manifold outline do not establish gear-pump displacement, efficiency or loaded flow.
Ask for the motor's actual rating and the complete unit's delivered flow at the pressure your equipment requires. Confirm test voltage, fluid temperature and duty-cycle limits when comparing performance.
Our 2,500 vs. 3,200 PSI pressure-and-flow guide explains why reaching a pressure number does not establish practical lifting speed.
Do not assume equivalent output, service life or parts compatibility from resemblance alone. Those questions require specifications, applicable testing and support for the actual product.
6. Confirm Who Supplies Parts and Handles Support
Correct identification matters after the purchase. Instructions for a genuine KTI circuit may not apply to a different manifold, even when the unit's exterior resembles KTI equipment.
Before buying a replacement motor, cartridge, remote or other part, identify the exact unit and confirm fitment. Similar threads, connectors or appearance do not establish matching pressure ratings or function.
For troubleshooting, send clear photographs of the complete unit, identification label, manifold ports and pendant. Include your invoice or order information and a description of the problem. This helps us use the correct documentation and avoid spending time diagnosing a different circuit.
Ask who handles warranty requests and whether parts and documentation are available for the product you are actually purchasing.
A Buyer's Checklist for Genuine KTI Identification
- Confirm the stated brand: ask whether the item is genuine KTI or another manufacturer's alternative.
- Read the listing carefully: wording such as KTI-style, replacement or compatible does not by itself identify a unit as manufactured by KTI.
- Get the actual model: match it to the functions and specifications you need.
- Keep identifying records: photograph the label and retain the invoice and serial information when supplied.
- Document configuration changes: confirm any reservoir swap or other dealer-supplied change.
- Check pressure and controls: verify protection, operating directions and the matching hydraulic diagram.
- Confirm service support: identify who supplies parts and handles warranty questions.
Common Questions
Does a Missing Flag Sticker Mean My Unit Is Not KTI?
No. A flag sticker alone is insufficient to confirm or rule out the manufacturer. Use model identification, purchase records and supplier verification.
Why Is the Original KTI Label Missing After a Tank Upgrade?
The original reservoir label may not transfer cleanly during an in-house tank change. For units supplied by Primary Mover, contact us so we can check the serial information retained with our records.
Do All Genuine KTI Units Have the Same Pressure Settings and Controls?
No. KTI offers multiple circuits and configurations. Use the exact model's documentation rather than assuming one pictured unit represents the entire range.
Can a Lookalike Use the Same KTI Replacement Parts?
Do not assume interchangeability. Confirm the actual manufacturer and component specifications before ordering or installing a part.
