When Should You Choose a Gas-Powered Hydraulic Power Unit?

Choose a gas-powered hydraulic power unit when your work calls for frequent hydraulic cycles and you prefer an engine-driven pump to a large battery-powered motor. For crews making repeated trips to the dump, operating equipment trailers or moving large cylinders throughout the day, refueling an engine can fit the job better than managing hydraulic-pump battery capacity.

Primary Mover's gas-powered units use genuine Honda GX commercial engines. We hand-assemble these units in Mandeville, Louisiana, matching the engine, pump, reservoir and controls to the application.

Who Benefits Most From Gas-Powered Hydraulics?

Gas-powered equipment is worth considering when hydraulic operation is a regular part of the workday rather than an occasional task.

  • Tree-service and cleanup crews making repeated loaded dump cycles.
  • Contractors and material haulers who want dependable cycle times across multiple jobs.
  • Lowboy and equipment-trailer operators needing a properly matched independent hydraulic source.
  • Custom equipment builders needing particular circuit, flow and pressure combinations.

This is the type of frequent-use work we associate with our Extreme Series approach. Gas-powered and 24V Twin Engine systems offer different ways to support demanding applications; the best choice depends on the work, installation and available power source.

Engine-Driven Pumping Reduces Dependence on a Hydraulic Battery Bank

With a gas-powered unit, the engine drives the hydraulic pump. Hydraulic operation does not draw its main drive power from a trailer battery bank.

A pull-start engine with suitable manual hydraulic controls can offer straightforward operation: add the specified fuel, start the engine and operate the equipment according to its instructions.

Confirm the complete configuration. Electric starting, remote controls or electrically operated valves may still require a battery or another electrical supply. Gas-powered does not automatically mean every component is battery-free.

Battery-powered hydraulics remain a good fit for many trailers. Proper charging, solar maintenance and compatible lithium systems can support those installations. Gas becomes attractive when your usage pattern favors refueling and engine service over managing repeated high-current pump cycles.

The Primary Mover Honda GX200 Platform

Our current smaller gas platform uses the genuine Honda GX200, a 196cc engine commonly described as being in the 200cc class.

We selected that platform to provide a useful engine-and-pump combination for loaded hydraulic work. Engine displacement alone does not establish hydraulic output: pump displacement, engine speed, efficiency, valves and plumbing all affect the result.

As a general selection reference, our current base build is in the approximately 2.5 GPM class near 3,000 PSI. Confirm the model-specific output for the pump, engine speed and configuration you are ordering.

Useful Flow at Working Pressure Matters

A pump's low-pressure flow figure does not tell you how quickly it will raise a loaded dump body. Compare the oil delivered at the pressure the cylinder needs to move the load.

A properly matched gas engine and gear pump can provide useful flow through the intended working range. The actual pressure-and-flow curve depends on the build, fluid temperature and operating conditions; do not assume a perfectly flat curve.

Pressure provides cylinder force. Flow determines cylinder speed. More flow can shorten a cycle, but it does not increase the cylinder's pressure rating or the trailer's approved payload.

Choose the Hydraulic Circuit for Your Equipment

Primary Mover offers gas-powered builds in several configurations:

  • Single acting: powered movement in one direction with gravity or another external force providing the return.
  • Double acting: powered extension and retraction.
  • Single Double: one single-acting function and one double-acting function.
  • Dual Double: two double-acting functions.

Separate functions do not automatically mean simultaneous operation. Confirm the valve arrangement, controls, port requirements and intended sequence before ordering.

Our PF-GPU listing includes pull-start and electric-start choices with 5- and 8-gallon reservoir configurations. Review the selected option and contact us about custom requirements and availability.

Frequent Use Still Requires Cooling and Maintenance

Gas power removes the large electric pump motor's battery demand, but the hydraulic system still generates heat. Reservoir capacity, oil condition, return flow and cooling must suit the workload.

An engine that continues running does not establish unlimited hydraulic duty. Follow the engine and power unit's maintenance and operating instructions. Avoid holding a function at the end of its stroke or continuously bypassing across the relief valve.

Operate the engine outdoors, away from openings where exhaust could enter occupied spaces. Stop the engine and allow it to cool before refueling. Plan safe access to the controls, fuel fill and service points.

What About the Larger Honda GX390 Platform?

Primary Mover is developing a larger gas-powered platform around the Honda GX390 for applications requiring additional hydraulic output and different pump combinations.

This platform is in prototype development. Final flow ratings, pressure settings, configurations and production availability must be confirmed before specifying it for a project.

If your equipment needs more output than the current GX200-based build, contact us with the required flow at working pressure. We can discuss the application and current development status.

Hand-Assembled in Mandeville, Louisiana

Our team hand-assembles Primary Mover gas-powered hydraulic units in Mandeville, Louisiana. That lets us work directly with customers on the engine, pump, reservoir, controls and application requirements.

Custom pressure and circuit requests must remain within the approved ratings of the complete system. Start with the cylinder and equipment requirements, then choose the appropriate power-unit build.

Common Questions

Will a Gas-Powered Unit Make My Trailer Lift More Weight?

It does not increase the trailer or hoist's structural rating. Correctly matched pressure provides the required cylinder force; delivered flow affects speed. Follow the equipment's approved pressure, geometry and load limits.

Does Every Gas-Powered Unit Need a Battery?

No. A suitable pull-start, manually controlled build can operate without a large hydraulic-drive battery bank. Electric starting and electrical controls can introduce separate battery requirements. Confirm the ordered configuration.

Can I Run It Continuously Until the Fuel Runs Out?

Fuel availability is only one operating limit. Engine maintenance, hydraulic temperature, cooling and component ratings still apply. Frequent-use capability does not authorize continuous operation against relief pressure or unrestricted duty.

Can You Build a Unit for My Dump Trailer or Equipment Trailer?

We can discuss standard and custom configurations. Send the cylinder model, required operating pressure, desired cycle time, oil-volume requirement and control functions so we can evaluate the match.
