❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between 7-way and direct wire?
The 7-way version is plug-and-play and uses your trailer’s existing 7-way harness. The pass-through plug installs between your trailer and towing vehicle, making it an easy way to use existing wiring to power the Road Charger.
The direct wire version connects straight to your vehicle’s battery, requiring you to run wire to the front of the vehicle. While it may slightly reduce resistance, the main difference is application — the direct wire setup typically stays with the vehicle, while the 7-way version stays with the trailer and can be used across multiple vehicles.
The 7-way option is ideal for flexibility and ease of use, while direct wire is better suited for dedicated setups or vehicles without a 7-way plug.
Can I use the solar panel on the 24V version?
Currently, no. The solar panel is designed for 12V systems only and is not compatible with the 24V configuration at this time. Future versions may support solar integration.
Can I shorten the direct wire harness?
Yes. The kit includes a 30 ft 8-gauge wire with ring terminals pre-installed. You can cut the wire to your desired length and re-terminate as needed for your installation.
Will this work with modern smart alternators?
Yes. The Road Charger is designed to create a load demand that helps activate modern smart alternators, allowing them to increase output and provide consistent charging while driving.
Is this better than a standard trailer charger?
Absolutely. This is an onboard charging system that uses your vehicle’s full capability while driving. Unlike traditional AC chargers that require shore power, the Road Charger keeps your battery charged automatically every time you’re on the road.
