Vertical Hydraulic Pump Suction Tube Upgrade
Convert Your Hydraulic Power Unit for Vertical Mounting
The Primary Mover Vertical Suction Tube Upgrade allows you to convert your hydraulic power unit from a standard horizontal setup to a vertical mounting configuration.
Most hydraulic power units come configured with a 90-degree inlet pipe, designed for horizontal (flat) installation. When the unit is mounted vertically, this setup prevents the suction strainer from reaching the bottom of the tank — which can lead to poor performance or pump damage.
This upgrade replaces the elbow-style inlet with a straight pickup pipe and strainer, allowing proper fluid pickup when the tank is mounted upright.
Why This Matters
Hydraulic pumps rely on consistent oil supply. If the suction tube does not reach the bottom of the tank:
- The pump may draw air instead of fluid
- Hydraulic performance can become inconsistent
- You risk premature pump wear or failure
This upgrade ensures your hydraulic power unit operates correctly in a vertical position by maintaining proper oil pickup at all times.
How It Works
- Replaces the standard 90° suction elbow
- Installs a straight inlet pipe with strainer
- Allows the pickup to reach the bottom of the reservoir
- Enables safe and reliable vertical pump mounting
Important Fitment Information
Suction tube length is critical. Not all tanks use the same depth, and the pickup must reach the bottom of the reservoir for proper operation.
When purchased with a Primary Mover or KTI hydraulic power unit:
- We automatically size the suction tube to match your tank
- No additional information is required
When purchased separately:
- You must provide your tank size or depth
- We will size the pickup tube accordingly
If no tank information is provided, we will contact you before shipping to ensure proper fitment.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I achieve a vertical pump setup?
To safely run a hydraulic power unit vertically, you need a suction tube that reaches the bottom of the tank. This upgrade replaces the standard elbow fitting with a straight pickup pipe and strainer designed for vertical operation.
Is this necessary for vertical mounting?
Yes. Without the correct suction tube, the pump may not draw fluid properly when mounted upright. This upgrade is required to ensure proper oil pickup and prevent damage.
How do I know if this is the right length for my tank?
If purchased with a power unit, we size it automatically based on your tank. If purchased separately, you will need to provide your tank size or depth so we can match it correctly.
What happens if the pickup tube is too short?
A short pickup tube may not reach the oil, causing the pump to draw air instead of fluid. This can result in poor performance and potential pump damage.
Can I install this myself?
Yes. This is a straightforward swap from the existing inlet fitting. If you are unsure, our team can guide you through installation.
